Summary:
1. Your self-respect is important
When you’re in a relationship, it’s common for one person to dominate over the other. It may be a natural occurrence, as it’s normal for one person to stamp their personality on the relationship.
2. You cannot be pleasing people all the time
One of the traps you might fall into in a relationship is the need to please your partner all the time. While it’s certainly important to do things that would please your partner, doing whatever they want whenever they want is only hurtful to you in the long run.
3. There should be a balance of power
Who has the most power in your relationship, you or your partner? The right answer should be both! In a healthy relationship, there’s a balance of power that keeps both people happy. When a relationship is built on equality and respect, it becomes the most fulfilling relationship.
4. Learning to say no and being comfortable with it
So your partner wants to go to the movies while you feel like having a cup of coffee and just relaxing around your house in your pajamas? While compromise is a good thing, make sure you aren’t the only one making all the adjustments and sacrifices. It’s okay to say no sometimes.
5. A little self-love goes a long way
Yes, loving your partner is important for a healthy relationship. But so is your love for yourself. Treat yourself with respect and learn to love who you are. This means enjoying your own company once in a while. Be with no one else other than yourself.
6. There’s no shame in asking for help
One problem in a relationship is that only one person does all the chores, while the other is on the couch. It’s important you feel secure enough to ask your partner to help you out with anything you need to be doing.
7. Stop feeling guilty
Never ever feel guilty about setting boundaries in your relationship. It’s easier said than done. Every time you enforce a boundary, you might end up feeling guilty. But you have to stop! Retrain your brain.
